Tonga 🇹🇴

It’s also the only place in the world with a regulated, permitted whale swim industry, making it the gold standard for responsible humpback encounters. Tonga doesn’t try to impress you. Paradise Taveuni

This is the kind of place you don't want to leave. A small, intimate dive resort sitting right above the Somosomo Strait with direct access to Rainbow Reef. All-inclusive, all relaxed. The food is great, the house reef is excellent and the dive team knows every corner of the strait. They welcome you with a foot rub and a sulu — and by day two it feels like home. One of our favourite properties in the Pacific.

Blue Water Retreat

Purpose-built for whale encounters on the remote island of 'Eua. This is not a luxury resort and it doesn't pretend to be. What it is: the best base for swimming with humpback whales, run by people who genuinely care about the animals and the experience. Ice baths after a day on the water, yoga on the oceanfront deck, kava ceremonies under the stars. Simple, intentional, and exactly where you want to be when a 15-metre humpback rises from the blue right in front of you.

Day-by-day program

Departure from Europe to Fiji. Long-haul flight across the Pacific via connecting hubs (typically Los Angeles, Dubai or Singapore). Sit back, relax and prepare for the adventure that combines Fiji’s legendary reefs with Tonga’s majestic humpback whales.

Long-haul day across the Pacific. Time zone crossings and adjustment as we head toward Fiji. Final approach planned to arrive Nadi on Aug 4 in the morning.

Arrival in Nadi (NAN). Private ground transfer Port Denarau / Nadi Airport to The Pearl South Pacific Resort in Pacific Harbour. Refreshing welcome drink on arrival and check-in to your room. Probably check-in the dive shop the same day for the next dive days!

2-tank Ultimate Shark Encounter dives in Beqa Lagoon — one of the world’s most famous shark dives. Site selection depends on weather and conditions. Possible encounters with bull sharks, tiger sharks, nurse sharks and various reef sharks at the feeding plateau, accompanied by experienced dive masters. Dives include tanks, weights and refreshments. Marine park fee USD 15 per shark diving day is additional.

2-tank dive day exploring Pacific Harbour’s vibrant soft coral reefs. Fiji is known as the Soft Coral Capital of the World — expect dense fields of soft corals in purple, pink, orange and yellow across pinnacles and walls. Site selection happens spontaneously based on weather and current. Tanks, weights and refreshments included.

Private transfer from The Pearl to Nadi Airport. Domestic flight Nadi to Taveuni – Fiji’s Garden Island. Airport pickup and transfer to Paradise Taveuni resort. Welcome foot rub on arrival and complimentary sulu. Settle in and enjoy your first evening at this intimate dive resort perched above the Somosomo Strait, home of the legendary Rainbow Reef.

First dive day with Paradise Taveuni. Two guided boat dives on the Somosomo Strait — site selection depends on current and weather. World-class soft coral diving with a chance of Great White Wall, Annie’s Bommie, the Fish Factory or Rainbow’s End. Tanks, weights and weight belt included. Unlimited shore diving available between trips. All meals at the resort.

Second guided dive day. Two more boat dives in the Somosomo Strait — sites chosen spontaneously based on conditions. Continued exploration of Taveuni’s biodiverse reefs with chances for hawksbill turtles, schooling fusiliers, white-tip reef sharks and the endless soft coral gardens that made Fiji world-famous. Unlimited shore diving in the afternoon.

Free day at Paradise Taveuni. Unlimited shore diving from the house reef (7am–5pm) — perfect for relaxed self-guided dives. Or simply enjoy yourself.

Checkout at Paradise Taveuni. Ground transfer to Matei Airport. Domestic flight Taveuni → Nadi, then international flight Nadi → Tonga (Nuku’alofa, TBU). Arrival in the Kingdom of Tonga. Overnight accommodation in Nuku’alofa.

Transfer from Nuku’alofa to ‘Eua Island (ferry or domestic flight). Check-in at Blue Water Retreat — a purpose-built whale swim retreat on the remote island of ‘Eua. Welcome briefing, marine biology presentation on Tonga’s humpback whales and sharks. Welcome kava ceremony and bonfire under the stars. Starlink Wi-Fi, all meals, wellness facilities and yoga included.

First day on the water with Tonga’s humpback whales. Guided whale swim on licensed charter boats — ‘Eua is one of the very few places on Earth where you can legally swim with humpback whales in their natural habitat. Possible encounters with mothers and calves, heat runs and singing males. Sightings are weather- and nature pendant, never guaranteed.

Second day of guided whale swims. Humpback whales migrate to Tonga’s warm waters each year between July and October to breed and nurse their young. Visibility is crystal clear and encounters can be intimate and respectful. Evening marine biology presentation at the retreat.

Morning whale swim session. Afternoon half-day island tour of ‘Eua — dramatic cliffs, ancient rainforest and spectacular coastal scenery. ‘Eua is Tonga’s oldest island with a wild, untouched beauty that feels like stepping back in time. Evening bonfire and kava ceremony.

Fourth day of guided whale swims. By now your guides know which areas have been most productive — the boat heads out to maximize chances of meaningful encounters. Always weather-dependent, but five days on the water dramatically increases the probability of magical moments.

Final day on the water with the humpback whales of Tonga. Last chance for those special moments. Souvenir kit on departure. Farewell dinner at the retreat — celebrate the incredible journey from Fiji’s reefs to Tonga’s whale realm.

Transfer from ‘Eua back to Nuku’alofa. International flight from Tonga back to Europe via connecting hub. The journey home — carry the Pacific with you.

Arrival back in Europe depending on routing and connections. End of an epic Pacific Triangle adventure — from Fiji’s shark arenas and rainbow reefs to swimming eye-to-eye with humpback whales in Tonga.
