The Deep South of the Maldives
Far below the resort islands of the central atolls, the Maldives turns wild. The southern atolls Huvadhoo, Fuvahmulah and Addu sit close to the equator, where currents from the open ocean sweep through wide channels and bring the big animals with them. This is channel diving at its best: grey reef sharks stacked in the blue, schools of eagle rays, dogtooth tuna and barracuda, and reefs that see only a handful of divers a year. No crowds and no traffic at the dive sites, just the raw Maldives the way they looked decades ago.
Fuvahmulah, the island of big sharks
The heart of this trip is Fuvahmulah, a single island forming its own atoll, rising alone from the open ocean with no lagoon and no neighbouring reefs to shelter it. That isolation is exactly what makes it world famous: tiger sharks patrol the harbour area year round, and dives here regularly bring you eye to eye with several of them in a single dive. The deep water starts right at the shoreline, so pelagic visitors pass close by. Thresher sharks, silvertips, oceanic mantas, schooling hammerheads and, in season, even whale sharks and mola mola have been recorded here. All sightings are nature and never guaranteed, but few places on earth offer better odds of meeting big sharks than Fuvahmulah. Between dives the island itself is worth exploring: a lush strip of land with freshwater lakes, its own language, its own culture and barely any tourism.

Diving Fuvahmulah is all about local knowledge, and that is exactly what the Fuvahmulah Dive School stands for. The team of local guides grew up on this island, helped pioneer the famous tiger shark dives at the harbour and runs them to strict protocols: clear briefings, controlled positioning and small groups in the water. Beyond the tiger dives, the guides read the conditions daily and know every corner of the plateau, choosing the best spots for thresher sharks, silvertips, oceanic mantas and schooling hammerheads. Sightings are nature and never guaranteed, but you will not find anyone better placed to make them happen than this crew.
Your base for five nights is the Ocean Pearl, a modern hotel in the centre of Fuvahmulah with 26 comfortable rooms, a rooftop pool, spa and its own restaurant, just minutes from the dive school and the harbour. Short distances are the real luxury here: breakfast, a few minutes to the boat, and surface intervals spent resting instead of commuting. Staying on the island also means experiencing real Fuvahmulah life, from the famous Thoondu beach to the freshwater lakes, a language of its own and a community that still sees very few travellers.

The Seascape is one of the newest boats in the Maldives, launched in 2023 and run by EcoPro, one of the most experienced liveaboard operators in the country. At 41 metres she carries a maximum of 28 guests in 14 air conditioned cabins with ensuite bathrooms, spread over three decks: eight lower deck cabins, two ocean view doubles on the main deck and four ocean view cabins on the upper deck. A classy interior, plenty of lounge space and an eco conscious philosophy make her a very comfortable home for a week at sea.
All diving is done from a separate dive dhoni, which keeps the main vessel quiet and makes entries and exits easy even in current, with up to three dives a day, free nitrox and 11.5 and 13.5 litre aluminium tanks with DIN and INT valves on board. On this route the Seascape sails the far south from Gan to Kooddoo, through Addu and the wide channels of Huvadhoo, a part of the Maldives that only a handful of boats visit each season. The crew's experience down here is what turns strong currents and remote channels into world class dives: grey reef sharks stacked in the blue, eagle rays, dogtooth tuna and huge schools of fish. Sightings are nature and never guaranteed, but the Deep South rarely disappoints.
