Gorilla Habituation 🦍 This is not the common gorilla permit. Next to the standard trek, every guest gets a gorilla habituation permit: four full hours with a gorilla family instead of one, in a group of maximum four guests, together with the researchers. More time, more behaviour, a far more intimate encounter.
Both Gorilla Experiences 🌿 We do both in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest: one day the standard gorilla trek, one day the habituation experience. Add the chimpanzee habituation in Kibale and you get the best great ape sightings Uganda has to offer.
An Africa Special 🦁 Between the forests we go on safari in Queen Elizabeth National Park: game drives on the Kasenyi plains, a boat trip on the Kazinga Channel with hippos and buffalo, and the tree climbing lions of Ishasha.
Western Uganda is primate country. Along the Albertine Rift, between the Rwenzori Mountains and the volcanic hills on the borders with Congo and Rwanda, ancient rainforest and open savannah lie side by side. It is one of the very few regions on earth where you can see mountain gorillas and wild chimpanzees on the same trip, together with classic African wildlife.
Kibale National Park is a tropical rainforest with one of the highest densities of primates in Africa. It is home to around 1,500 chimpanzees and a dozen other primate species, such as red colobus, L’Hoest’s monkeys and grey cheeked mangabeys. Around the park lie the tea plantations and crater lakes of Fort Portal, and the community-run Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary.
Queen Elizabeth National Park is the region’s safari heart. Its savannah, crater lakes and the Kazinga Channel are home to elephants, buffalo, Uganda kob, hippos and lions. In the remote Ishasha sector, lions rest in the branches of fig trees.
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Africa’s oldest rainforests, more than 25,000 years old. Its misty, steep slopes shelter about half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas. Besides the standard one hour gorilla trek, Bwindi is one of the only places that offers the gorilla habituation experience, four hours with a gorilla family in a group of four guests at most.

Uganda is one of the very few places on earth where you can stand face to face with mountain gorillas and wild chimpanzees in the same week. This Africa special takes you from the primate forests of Kibale over the savannah of Queen Elizabeth National Park to the ancient Bwindi Impenetrable Forest.
What makes this trip different is the gorilla habituation experience. Most visitors buy the standard permit, which gives you one hour with a gorilla family. On top of that standard trek, every guest on this trip also gets a habituation permit: a maximum of four guests join the researchers and trackers and spend four full hours with a gorilla family that is still getting used to people. More time for photography, more natural behaviour, and time to ask the researchers everything you want to know. In Kibale we do the same with the chimpanzees, with a chimpanzee habituation permit.
Between the forests there is classic safari: game drives on the Kasenyi plains, a boat trip on the Kazinga Channel among hippos, buffalo and elephants, and the tree climbing lions of Ishasha. Wildlife sightings are nature and never guaranteed, and trekking in Bwindi can be steep and long, so a reasonable fitness level is needed.
