A Devine Double 🇲🇽 Mexico is a diving Valhalla. It hosts tons of the most marine diverse areas in the world, and we found nothing better than to combine tow of them in one single trip: A Mexico Double of two destinations that would be worth visiting even individually. Crossing the Atlantic with a purpose, that is a 4 day ocean safari in Cabo, followed by a week Socorro liveaboard!

Socorro Island 🪨 Revillagigedo's archipelago's most well known island Socorro, is a magnet for large pelagics such as oceanic mantas, tons of sharks, dolphins and big schools of fish. It’s mysterious and humongous underwater rock formations are as spectacular as the animals that surround it. + Mid April is usually when whale sharks start appearing in the region!

Shark Diving Cabo 🌊 Before Socorro, and right in the heart of the spring pelagic season, we are taking on some open-ocean shark action in the Sea of Cortez and Pacific convergence zone with Latitude Encounters. Blue sharks, mako sharks and even the occasional smooth hammerhead roam these zones, and so will we! Mouth watering stuff.

Yes, I know. I use a lot of superlatives when I talk & write. But, those of you who have experienced the thrill of Socorro will understand my enthusiasm. The Revillagigedo Islands present interaction with Giant Giant Mantas unlike anywhere else. These animals, which often exceed a 20-foot wingspan, approach divers with absolutely no fear ….. in fact, it often seems they exude great joy at welcoming the visitors to their environment.

The effect on divers is always one of intense emotion and the scuba diving at Socorro, in my opinion, can rightfully claim its place amongst the world’s absolute top pelagic destinations … particularly when you add in a variety of shark species, including occasional whale sharks … and the migrating humpback whales in late winter, early spring.

The Nautilus Under Sea is a dive liveaboard built specifically for the Socorro run and operating out of Cabo San Lucas year round. She carries a maximum of 24 guests across 12 ensuite staterooms on the lower deck, with lounge and dining spaces on the mid deck and an open sundeck above. The design is built around comfort at sea and quick turnaround between dives, with a wide dive platform at the stern and easy access to the water.

From November to May each year, the Revillagigedo Archipelago becomes one of the most concentrated big animal aggregation sites in the Pacific. Socorro is a UNESCO World Heritage marine sanctuary 400km south of Cabo San Lucas, and the only place in the world where giant Pacific manta rays actively seek out divers, hovering above the pinnacles at cleaning stations and staying as long as the group holds still. Add hammerhead schools, silky sharks, whitetips, humpbacks late in the season, and the resident bottlenose dolphins of Socorro Island, and every dive here holds the chance of a headline animal.

Day-by-day program

– This is a sample itinerary, weather conditions or captain decisions may lead to changes – Arrive at Los Cabos International (SJD), group transfer to Sandos Finisterra Los Cabos. Check in, all inclusive resort with pools that overlook Land’s End where the Sea of Cortez meets the Pacific. Welcome dinner and drinks with the group, briefing on the week to come.

Early breakfast, transfer to the harbour to meet Latitude Encounters. Six divers per boat, no bigger. Head out into open water off the Baja tip. Mako sharks come in first, blue sharks follow, and silky sharks may join later in the day. Six hours on the water, snorkel and freediving encounters only. Back to the resort by mid afternoon.

Second day with Latitude. Same drill, different conditions. Different sharks show up on different days and the crew read the surface for the signs. Long surface intervals in the sun between drops, sundowner back at the resort.

Early transfer overland to La Ventana on the Sea of Cortez side. Private boat charter for the day, hunting the mobula aggregations that fill the bay in April. Massive schools flying out of the water in the morning, and time in the water with them when conditions cooperate. Sea lions and dolphins are common bonus. Transfer back to Cabo in the evening.

Morning free at the resort. Afternoon transfer to the harbour to board the Nautilus Under Sea. Cabin assignment, gear setup, welcome dinner, safety briefing. The boat casts off in the evening for the overnight sail south to San Benedicto in the Revillagigedo Archipelago.

Roughly 24 hours at sea. Arrive at San Benedicto in the afternoon. Check dive at a shallow site to get gear dialled in and the group ready for what is coming. Dinner on board.

Second day at San Benedicto, more time with the mantas and the resident hammerheads at El Cañón. Overnight sail toward Socorro Island proper.

Sites like Cabo Pearce and Punta Tosca. This is where the resident bottlenose dolphins live. They actively seek out divers, come in close, and interact until they get bored. Mantas here too, and the chance of humpback whales still in the area at the end of the season.

The remote pinnacle. A tiny rock in open ocean, six hours from anywhere. Whitetip sharks stacked in caves, silkies in the blue, tuna, wahoo, and hammerheads in the current. Big animal diving at its rawest. Three to four dives if conditions cooperate.

Final dives at San Benedicto, with a last go at The Boiler and El Cañón. Afternoon sailing back toward Cabo. Farewell dinner on board, group photos, slideshow of the week.

Arrival back in the harbour early morning. Breakfast on board, then disembarkation and transfer to Los Cabos Airport for onward flights.
