10 Guests, 18 Berths 🎟️ We chartered the whole vessel – and capped it at just 10 guests instead of the usual 18. That means private or twin cabins for everyone, space everywhere on board and, above all, nearly double the cage time: no queues at the surface cage, far more ocean-floor descents per person. Add the exclusive landing rights for a guided walk among the Neptune Islands' fur seal colony, and this is great white diving as private as it gets.
South Australia is Australia’s untamed southern edge: a coastline of wind-carved cliffs, empty beaches and cold, nutrient-rich water that feeds one of the richest temperate marine ecosystems on Earth. Off the Eyre Peninsula and the seafood capital of Port Lincoln, the Southern Ocean delivers encounters found nowhere else — playful Australian sea lions, huge colonies of long-nosed fur seals, dolphins, leafy seadragons in the shallows, and in season the great cuttlefish gatherings of Whyalla.
But one animal made this coast world-famous: the great white shark. Nowhere else is the history of humans and great whites written so vividly. It was here, at Aldinga Beach in 1963, that spearfishing champion Rodney Fox survived one of the most infamous shark attacks ever recorded — 462 stitches — and instead of seeking revenge, invented the shark cage and founded modern cage diving. It was here, in the Spencer Gulf, that Ron and Valerie Taylor filmed the first-ever underwater footage of great whites and the live shark sequences for Steven Spielberg’s “Jaws”. And it is here that the story came full circle: today the great white is fully protected in Australian waters, and the Neptune Islands, home to Australia’s largest fur seal colony, the sharks’ natural hunting ground are safeguarded as the Neptune Islands Group (Ron and Valerie Taylor) Marine Park.
The Neptune Islands, about 40 nautical miles south of Port Lincoln, are the only place in all of Australia where cage diving with great white sharks is permitted. October is one of the two very best months of the year here: peak shark reliability, mild spring weather and long southern days. This is not an aquarium experience — it is the open Southern Ocean, the sharks’ own territory, exactly as it should be.

Rodney Fox Shark Expeditions — The Original, Since 1965
No name is more closely tied to the great white shark than Rodney Fox. Attacked in 1963 and sewn back together with 462 stitches, he returned to the sea, built the world's first shark cage famously inspired by watching visitors watch lions at Adelaide Zoo, simply reversing who sits in the cage and pioneered shark cage diving and great white tourism. For six decades the Fox family has led shark research, conservation and filmmaking, from "Jaws" to countless documentaries. Today the expeditions are led by his son Andrew Fox, one of the world's foremost great white experts, and every trip directly supports the Fox Shark Research Foundation. This is not a tour company that offers sharks. This is the family that wrote the book on them.
MV Rodney Fox is the only liveaboard operating at the Neptune Islands while day boats come and go, we stay with the sharks around the clock. The 32-metre, three-deck expedition vessel carries the world's only ocean-floor cage, lowered to the seabed at around 20 metres so certified divers meet the great whites at eye level in their own world: a world exclusive. Non-divers and divers alike enjoy unlimited time in the surface cage. Rodney Fox also holds exclusive rights to land on the Neptune Islands themselves for a guided walk among the fur seal colony. Fresh South Australian food and wine, a spacious dive deck, open saloon and upper shark-viewing gallery complete the picture.
Our private charter: 10 guests instead of 18. The vessel is licensed for 18 divers in nine cabins: six upper-deck cabins (double bed with single bunk above), two lower-deck twin cabins and a master ensuite cabin with double bed and private bathroom off the wheelhouse. On this exclusive Behind the Mask Travel charter we sail with a maximum of just 10 guests. That means private or twin cabins for everyone, space everywhere on board and above all: dramatically more cage time. With barely half the usual group, cage rotations nearly double; you dive the surface cage as often as you like and get far more descents in the ocean-floor cage. Six full dive days with the great whites, uncrowded, unhurried, unforgettable.
