The fjords in the Lofoten area are undoubtedly THE best place on earth to observe orcas in their natural habitat, while hunting for herring in the north of Norway! From the boat or sharing time the water, it's one of the top nature experiences on the planet. 🌍
Although often perceived as the Orca Kingdom, there are other predators who also want a piece of the pie! Over the past few years, humpback whales have been spotted regularly joining the orca during the herring feeding frenzies. 🐋
Another highlight on this insane trip: the Northern lights, also known as the Aurora Borealis, are a natural phenomenon that occurs when electrically charged particles from the sun collide with particles in the Earth's atmosphere. This collision creates incredible, colourful lights that dance across the sky, making for a truly breathtaking sight. 🌌
The Arctic Circle delivers one of the ocean’s great wildlife spectacles, particularly in the fjords of northern Norway. Each autumn, massive herring migrations draw orcas and humpback whales in from the open sea, turning sheltered inlets into extraordinary feeding grounds.
Orcas hunt in coordinated family pods, herding herring into tight bait balls before stunning them with powerful tail slaps. Humpbacks lunge through the same schools with their mouths wide open, swallowing thousands of fish in a single surge.
With snow-capped fjords as a backdrop and the northern lights a real possibility overhead, it is one of the most compelling wildlife experiences on the planet.

The trip is all about 3 things: the snowy Arctic atmosphere, a fantastic boat with exquisite service and of course the infamous orca.
Every autumn and early winter, massive shoals of Norwegian spring-spawning herring migrate from their summer feeding grounds in the open Norwegian Sea into the sheltered fjords of northern Norway .Where the herring go, the predators follow. Orcas (and humpback whales) arrive in huge numbers to feast on this concentrated, easy-to-find food source.
Bonus sightings often include the tantalising northern lights, with its wonderful latin name 'Aurora Borealis'.
The Kinfish is a legendary vessel, led by our colleague and good friend Mads Odgaard who guides and roams this waters yearly. Originally a Norwegian rescue and research vessel, the Kinfish converted into an expedition ship. She can host up to 12 guests across 6 cabins and a crew of 9. A 2026 deck extension added a panoramic hot tub and a covered hangout area.
The Kinfish operates in Northern Norway (orca and humpback expeditions in the Skjervøy / Tromsø region from November to January) and Svalbard in the summer season.
The Orca Kingdom trip is one of our "classics", providing consistent encounters on the highest level and all round trip that just hits different because of its scenery.
Be prepared to be cold in the water, but fired up from being eye to eye with the ocean's smartest and fearsome animal. You won't regret it.
