Orcas🐼 The fjords north of Tromsø area are undoubtedly THE best place on earth to observe orcas in their natural habitat, while hunting for herring in the north of Norway! To be eye to eye with these 4 ton giants is an experience that many see as a highlight in their life!
Humpback Whales 🐋 Although often perceived as the Orca Kingdom, there are other predators who also want a piece of the pie! Over the past few years, humpback whales have been spotted regularly joining the orca during the herring feeding frenzies.
Land Based 🛖 Most orca experiences in Norway are hosted by liveboards, which means guests stay on the water the whole week. This trip is land-based, meaning that at night we sleep in two cozy houses in Skjervøy, where we get picked up in the morning and dropped off again at the end of the day for a freezing night walk!
The Arctic Circle delivers one of the ocean’s great wildlife spectacles, particularly in the fjords of northern Norway. Each autumn, massive herring migrations draw orcas and humpback whales in from the open sea, turning sheltered inlets into extraordinary feeding grounds.
Orcas hunt in coordinated family pods, herding herring into tight bait balls before stunning them with powerful tail slaps. Humpbacks lunge through the same schools with their mouths wide open, swallowing thousands of fish in a single surge.
With snow-capped fjords as a backdrop and the northern lights a real possibility overhead, it is one of the most compelling wildlife experiences on the planet.

Skjervøy Fish Camp sits right on the harbour of Skjervøy, the small fishing island three hours north of Tromsø that has become the winter capital of Norwegian orca watching. The camp is a cluster of modern seaside cabins, purpose built for the extreme conditions of the Arctic autumn and winter. Two cozy houses accommodate the group, with twin and double rooms, private bathrooms, fully equipped kitchens, and communal living areas where the day gets debriefed over dinner and a beer.
Everything about the camp is designed with divers, freedivers and winter travellers in mind. Wet gear rooms with proper drying racks (essential when your suit comes off soaked and freezing every afternoon), heated floors in the bathrooms, high powered showers, electric heating throughout, fast WiFi, and a Nordic sauna to shake off the cold before dinner. The kitchens are stocked with everything needed to cook, and there is a well stocked grocery store two minutes walk down the road for basics.
For this trip the location is everything. The Ocean X is moored a three minute drive from the cabins, so mornings mean suit up in the warm cabin, grab your camera bag, and jump in the truck down to the harbour. In the afternoons you are back before the polar sunset around 15:00, then a slow return to warm meals, hot showers and the aurora dancing over the fjord if the sky cooperates. Simple, functional, and exactly what a week chasing orcas in the Arctic asks for.
