Western Australia is the country’s vast, wild frontier, a state larger than most nations, with a coastline that runs for thousands of kilometres from the tropical north to the forests of the south. Far up on the remote Coral Coast, roughly 1,200 km north of Perth, lies its greatest marine treasure: the Ningaloo Reef.
Ningaloo is one of the largest fringing reefs on earth and a UNESCO World Heritage site, famous for one rare quality. The reef hugs the shore, so pristine coral gardens, turtles, manta rays and reef sharks are often just a few strokes from the beach. Between roughly March and August the largest fish in the sea, the whale shark, cruises the outer reef, and from July to October humpback whales pass through on their migration. This is a place where the red desert meets a turquoise sea, and the wildlife encounters feel genuinely wild and uncrowded.
Coral Bay, a tiny settlement halfway along the Ningaloo coast, is the gateway to the reef’s southern reaches and the home of Sail Ningaloo. From here the sailing catamaran Shore Thing slips into remote lagoons and anchorages that day boats never reach, for snorkelling, diving and kayaking far beyond the crowds. Ningaloo is remote, and getting there is part of the adventure, but few reefs in the world reward the journey so completely.

Shore Thing is a purpose built 51ft sailing catamaran offering an intimate, eco luxury liveaboard experience on Western Australia's World Heritage Ningaloo Reef, exploring remote reaches between Coral Bay and Norwegian Bay that few visitors ever reach. Over seven nights the crew guide snorkelling up to three times a day and diving is offered on average 1-2 of those times, visiting manta rays at Batemans Bay, turtles at Point Cloates, the Fin wreck and pristine coral gardens. Two Stateroom King cabins (twin or double) and two Deluxe Double cabins, all with private bathroom and air conditioning.
Ningaloo is the largest fringing reef on the planet, famous for coral that begins just metres from the shore and for close encounters with big marine life. October falls in humpback whale season, which runs roughly from July to November, so it is a wonderful time to watch humpbacks migrating south with their calves, often hearing their song underwater. Manta rays are found reliably year round at the Coral Bay cleaning stations, alongside turtles, reef sharks and huge schools of fish. Spring means warming water, long sunny days and generally calmer conditions. All wildlife encounters are nature and never guaranteed.
