Best Of Tuamotus

The waters of French Polynesia are remote and uninterrupted. The marine life is abundant, with manta and eagle rays, sharks of many species and sizes, stingrays, tunas, dolphins, even the occasional swordfish. Most divesites are entirely unfrequented, so we forget about bubbles from other dive groups.

We move between atolls by catamaran, which means the boat is the base. You sleep on board, eat on board, and most dives drop straight off the back. Cabins are comfortable, the crew handles everything, and the food is fresh and simple. No transfers, no checking in and out, no rush.

Above water it stays quiet in a way that is getting hard to find. Empty divesites, lagoons that genuinely look like the photos, sundowners on deck. The luxury here is not in the trim. It is in the space, the time, and the fact that for ten days almost nothing is asked of you.

– This is a sample itinerary, organisation might vary due to weather and other circumstances – Arrival at Faa’a International Airport, welcome with a flower lei and private transfer to Pension de la Plage on the west coast. Time to settle in and get over the long flight.

A free day on Tahiti. Snorkel in the lagoon in front of the pension, visit the Museum of Tahiti and her Islands or the market in Papeete in the morning.

Two tours with Fluid off the west coast of Tahiti, morning and afternoon, about 3 hours each, pick-up at the pension. In September mothers with calves are often close to the reef, and when the whales are calm you can slip into the water with them. Sightings are never guaranteed.

Two more tours with Fluid in search of humpback whales, morning and afternoon. In between there is time to rest at the pension before the flight to the Tuamotus the next morning. Sightings are never guaranteed.

Transfer to the domestic airport and Air Tahiti flight to Rangiroa, one of the largest atolls in the world. Fare Hitimoana picks you up at the airport, a short drive to Tiputa village and the pass.

Two drift dives in the Tiputa pass with the incoming current. Bottlenose dolphins often come close to the divers here, and the grey reef sharks gather in the blue at the mouth of the pass.

Two more dives in and around the Tiputa pass. With luck great hammerheads pass by in the early morning, and silvertips and manta rays show up from time to time.

A day without diving. Visit the Blue Lagoon or the pink sand beaches by boat, or watch the dolphins jump in the waves of the pass from the shore in the afternoon.

Air Tahiti flight to Fakarava. The boat of Motu Aito Paradise takes you across the lagoon to the south of the atoll, a small lodge on its own motu close to the Tetamanu pass.

Two dives in the south pass with Motu Aito. Hundreds of grey reef sharks hang in the current along the wall, among groupers, napoleons and large schools of snappers.

Two more dives in the Tetamanu pass and the coral gardens inside the lagoon. The water is clear and calm here, ideal for photographers.

Boat transfer back to the north of the atoll and check-in at Havaiki Lodge near the village of Rotoava, right on the lagoon.

Last two dives of the pass, in the Garuae pass with O2 Fakarava. The widest pass of French Polynesia brings grey reef sharks, eagle rays and big schools of fish with the incoming tide.

A quiet last day without diving before the flights. Snorkel at the lodge’s jetty, where manta rays sometimes pass in the evening.
